The single biggest thing that has happened to change my life in the last 10 years was a careful re-examination of my diet. The change has been so dramatic that it seems like night and day. Now that I am calm and focused there is zero chance of me moving back to a diet that does not promote health and clear thought.
One of the beliefs that I hold is that every person is different and has different dietary needs. A lot of people live their lives in suffering due to food allergens, sensitivities, and intolerance. A food that is considered nourishing to one person can be poison to another, peanuts for example. For me i have adverse reactions to gluten, dairy, and to some degree citrus. After removing them from my diet I now have mental clarity, calm focus, and awareness. Stumbled on to a gluten-free diet, and after 1.5 weeks of adherence the fog lifted and I have not had any desire to eat food containing it. Not even a craving. The difference is so dramatic. Dairy annoys my digestive system causing a variety of symptoms from gas to diarrhea. It does not seem to be lactose, it seems to be all dairy and derivatives. It might be related to some junk going into the process. No idea. Citrus makes me a bit aggressive.
Gluten and dairy is almost impossible for me to avoid in a western diet. When combo meal A or B is offered the only correct answer is really neither. You add dairy, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, and high sugar foods to the mix my options become very limited. Contamination is as easy as sharing a frying surface or a cutting board with something I am allergic to and I am poisoned. Eating out has become not a viable option, and living like everyone else in a first world country is difficult. Simpler foods, less preparation, more fresh, and closer to the source has led me to central america to search for a place to grow my own food and or buy from local producers.
The affliction is called Celiac (Coeliac) disease sometimes called non-tropical sprue. They say it is genetically linked and is prevalent amongst those of Northern European descent. I have heard numbers as high as 1 in 30 of that group are affected. Some display wheat intolerance or allergies, some are more sensitive.
For those people like me who just know something is wrong but don't know what, it is a very confusing thing to isolate. It can take a month of total avoidance to notice any improvement. People who are poisoned eat more because their body is unable to process food effectively. And it works almost like an addiction where the person craves foods which are unhealthy for them. The symptoms manifest as digestive problems and very confusing symptoms due to nutrient deficiencies. It is all around nasty.
Hope that me sharing this will encourage those with dietary or diet-related concerns examine what in their diet is addicting or craved most and seriously examine what that thing is. For many people it is sugar, which is basically a poison. Smoking or drinking could also be included as diet because it gets substances into the blood stream. Water also is a big part of diet.
Once someone has a diet which supports healthy life and clear thought they have a good foundation in life. Without that good foundation, mental and health problems always seem to show up.
